The Art
North Wind, created by metal artist and fabricator Jake Mealey, is both a sculpture and a sensory experience. Crafted from hand-forged steel, the piece is designed to interact with its surroundings, channeling the spirit of the wind that sweeps across the Niagara Escarpment. With strong lines and subtle curves, North Wind captures movement in stillness—a moment of wild air held fast in iron. It invites visitors to pause and consider the unseen forces that shape both nature and creativity. As with many works on the trail, North Wind is more than decorative—it’s reflective, drawing attention to the natural elements we often overlook and transforming them into a focal point of appreciation.
Jake also created the beautiful sign stands for each art installation.

Jake Mealey
I’m Jake Mealey, a metal artist and fabricator based in South Georgian Bay. I run Black Spruce Design, where I build everything from functional architectural pieces to sculptural works like North Wind. My goal is simple but ambitious: to never stop progressing as a creator. In a world of fast, disposable, machine-made goods, I want to make things that are lasting, personal, and full of soul. At Black Spruce, every piece is an invitation to slow down and appreciate what time, energy, and intention can produce. I love taking the mundane and transforming it into something extraordinary—something that makes people stop and feel proud to own. That’s what drives me: pushing myself past what’s easy and into what’s meaningful. North Wind is part of that journey, and I’m honoured to share it with you on this trail.
